Melissa Ventura-Parra Horror and killers have been a deep interest of mine since I was about 5 years old and my mother introduced me to The Haunting, my first horror movie. I spent my elementary years reading all the Goosebumps books and all three books from Scary Stories to read in the Dark. I have a passion for all things horror. As I grew older and started to shift into the direction of slasher films, a topic that always crossed my mind is what makes a human being kill. As fun and as interesting as it may be to watch the blood and gore on film, it does haunt me when I realize that there are serial killers who are capable of doing this to another human being. As an eleventh grader, I took Psychology, and I remember the professor talking to us briefly about serial killers and how some of them are born without the part of us that makes us feel remorse. I would be lying if I didn’t say that serial killers, although the knowledge of them walking amongst us frightens me, also give me immense feelings of curiosity and wonder. As I have mentioned above, I have a deep, almost unnatural passion for things that fill us with so much paranoia and fear, which is why I want people to understand it. Many people do not give spooky stuff a chance and say they absolutely hate being scared, and it’s probably because they have seen the wrong type of horror for them. Also, I am going to be a makeup artist, and special effects makeup is something that has always intrigued me. I also want to make people realize that horror movies and books about killers have an absolute haunting truth behind them. There are some very sick people out there, blending into our society waiting to strike, and I want you to realize that we all have to be careful, and realize that although there might not be some guy out there with a hockey mask committing murder, serial killers in fact do exists among us and we need to be aware that sometimes, true monster don’t exist in movies and books, they walk amongst us.
